Honeybee Hives in Winter Snowstorm

  • Challenge

Hancock, NY — Owners of New York based River-Bee Honey has hive operations on the Delaware River. A blizzard and temps holding near zero (0°F) made owners concerned for the health of their hives. To inspect a hive safely required special care and a thermal drone.

  • Solution

After the blizzard subsided and temps fell to near zero degrees— we flew with a safe distance of the hives and determined only 1 hive had been lost, 7 hives had safely survived. Further, thermal shots reveal the bees had moved to top of their hive boxes for heat, consuming winter food supplies.
