Jack O’Lantern Spectacular of Louisville

  • Challenge

Louisville, KY — Set a World Record. The Louisville Parks Alliance and the miraculous pumkin carving folks host a special event annually. Inside a forest. It’s actually a haunted forest path lined with Artisan Halloween Pumpkins.

Kentucky UAS pitched and sold the idea for documenting the setup process, and then flying an FPV drone through the event for 4K video. In other words, the worlds first continuous one-take drone flight — through a haunted halloween forest ideally illuminated for the occassion.

Set a World Record. Blow up the internet. It all sounded so fun.

Well, as they say, be careful what you wish for.

  • Solution

First, it was a fantastic experience. Nevermind the drone crashes.

The staff literally closed the park and maintained the displays just for me. Guided me around. The kid inside cheered and felt so privileged, while the professional drone artist was profoundly honored.

Overall, the mission was a success, but a failure as designed. FortuIately, we always have backup plans and yet this incredible challenge went from Plan A to Plan F. Pain. Anger. Fear. Deadly pumpkins. This one had it all.

The forest was a GPS nightmare. Dead. Each flight had to be hand-flown, blind. Swirling winds gusted from every direction, all at once, literally blowing drones into trees. And geofencing from the nearby Louisville Airport “drifted” over the forest, preventing drones from launching.

Thankfully, the pilot was determined to capture the event and went the distance for everyone — delivering all materials promised, and, an edited together bonus ‘special event’ video for pure spectacular fun.
